I absolutely love my dogs. I have a husky, a pug, and recently adopted a stray beagle. But, my beagle isn’t the only new addition to my family. I recently found that my wife is having a baby and so we need as much extra space in the house as possible. Consequently, I decided to have my dogs make the transition from living inside to outside. But, I wanted to make sure they were as comfortable as possible and didn’t react badly to the move, so I started to look for doghouses. Since my dogs are all different breeds and sizes, I had trouble finding houses that would fulfill all of their needs. The only houses that I found were cheap, flimsy, plastic and lacked either the amount of space, comfort, or customization I was searching for. So, I decided to build them myself. Yet, I was clueless as to how to build a doghouse.
I contacted a few carpenters to see what it would cost to have the houses built for me, but their prices were sky high for what I didn’t think was a very complicated project. Frustrated, I began to search for beginner dog house plans and woodworking tips. I looked at dozens of sites, but they all offered similar products, standard three-by-three dog house plans that looked cramped and offered absolutely no customization for the varying characteristics of my dogs. Eventually I gave up and made a trip to my local PetSmart. But, after I stood in the dog aisle for over thirty minutes just staring at the pictures of bright plastic dog houses, an employee approached me and shared his frustration at the lack of options.
The employee then shared with me the name of a website that sold dog house plans, saying that he had finally just built his own dog house and that this site had numerous plans for all shapes, sizes, and breeds. He also told me that he had no clue how to build a dog house before but was able to easily follow the instructions. So, I rushed home and was thoroughly impressed, I tried out their product and it was only a few weeks later that I had three completely different dog houses that fit the needs of each of my dogs. Not only did the size of the houses vary but also the style and ventilation and insulation techniques. Now, my dogs are happy, my house is spacious, and I’m completely satisfied. I felt a great sense of accomplishment too as I am “NO!” carpenter.
